Summer spells, with their call to the garden, have us out making the most of the glorious weather. But just as we need a refreshing drink on a hot day, our gardens need proper hydration to bloom brilliantly. In this article, we’ll deliver some valuable watering tips ensuring your plants stay hydrated and vibrant.
Water Early or Late
Cooler times of the day, such as early morning, are the prime time for watering your plants. This strategic timing allows the water to efficiently reach the soil before much of it evaporates due to the day’s heat. An early water supply prepares your plants to endure the hot sun.
Can’t work in morning garden watering into your schedule? No worries. Watering your garden in the early evening is an effective alternative. While the peak sunlight hours have passed, there’s still enough daylight left for your plants to dry off. Beware though, as damp conditions can attract nocturnal pests like slugs.
Be a Rainwater Collector
Both your garden and bank account will thank you greatly if you practice rainwater harvesting. Using designated containers, such as water butts, you can store rainwater for future garden use. This method saves money on water bills and is eco-friendly. I’ve placed a water butt under every short roof of my home, shed, and greenhouse, maintaining a healthy water supply.
To maintain your harvesters, cover their ends with a layer of old tights. This will prevent blockage from leaves and other debris, which can go straight on your compost heap.
Rainwater is a healthier watering option for your plants than tap water. Unlike the latter, it doesn’t contain salts, minerals, or chemicals that can accumulate in the soil over time and negatively impact your plants. [1]
Be Consistent
Plants in pots may require more frequent hydration than those in beds and borders. They solely rely on the water and nutrition provided by you, which makes them prone to quicker dehydration. Therefore, during summer, you may need to water them daily. A checklist may help to ensure that none of them are overlooked.
Miracle-Gro®Premium Peat Free Moisture Control Compost for Pots & Baskets is a great care product. It comes with 6-month food and Aquacoir®technology, enabling the compost to absorb twice as much water. This water is stored and released gradually to your plants when they need it the most.
Maintain Luscious Lawns
Lawns cover large garden spaces and need extra care during spring and summer. During dry spells, avoid mowing your lawn too closely. Longer grass blades can help your lawn retain more moisture, which means you won’t have to water it as often.
When watering your lawn, try using the Miracle-Gro EverGreen Fast Green Spray & Feed. It can make your lawn greener within 24 hours and attaches conveniently to your hose. This product allows you to water and feed your lawn simultaneously, simplifying your lawn care routine.
For smaller lawns, Miracle-Gro EverGreen Fast Green Liquid Concentrate can be diluted with water and applied using a watering can. The product is child and pet friendly.
Setting Up Water Spots for Wildlife
Not just plants, local wildlife such as birds and insects too, will appreciate fresh water in a bowl. For hedgehogs, leave some water along with tinned turkey or chicken cat food or specialized hedgehog food. A bird bath can attract birds for a drink and a nice bath on a warm day. Upcycling items like an old sink into water features can create charming attractions for birds, butterflies, and insects.
Proper garden watering not only looks after your plant population but is also a great mini workout and an essential task for a glorious-looking garden. Throughout spring and summer, the extra bit of hydration helps plants and wildlife grow, giving us the beautiful blooms and fruits we love to see.
